The roof

Posted by austin hay on November 27, 2010 at 4:41 PM

The roof is up as you can see in my photos.

The roof was a little tricky to under stand but with help I got to it up.

This is one thing you either know or you don’t.

If you don’t then I would suggest that you get help from someone who knows what they are doing

This is one thing you do not want to mess with

With the roof up I also have put house rap and tarpaper on.

It is coming together

Well thanks for every one who has been on or just read it.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Great. Maybe you can get some material from construction sites. they usually throw lots of things away. You can also try Craigslist.org in free section. Glass companies often throw away used glass if you want to make your own windows. I also have a few other suggestions if you want then just let me know.
Thanks,
Alex

You might try the Belize Forum for info. Practically all the expats there live off the grid and know a lot about building their own, wiring, plumbing, solar, passive, electronics and a whole lot of stuff that they've had to invent. Once you sign on, just look under search for your subject and get all kinds of advice on what NOT to do as well as stuff you can and easier ways to do it.
Keep up the good work!
Oh, and look for a "used lumber' place. When a house is torn down, contractors quite often sell the tubs, sinks, windows, indoor and outdoor doors, hinges, latches, etc. Since you're going the smaller route, check out the local trailer sales people for smaller of the above (sinks, etc.). They, too, sell the parts when tearing down a trailer. And, of course, the "loo"; composting is the only way to go. Check out the boat size for a smaller bathroom. Or there may be someone there who builds them to size. So many ideas, so little time.......
And, yes, I've done a little building on my own.

I am so impressed that someone your age would undertake such a huge undertaking, both physically and also choosing to make a difference in the world by how you live!
Check out freecycle.com for giveaways that could help you. You have to register but it is worth it.

Good job!!

Alex has some great ideas for you. the craigslist and construction ones are awesome. When talking to the constrcution companies, go to the foremen or ther owner him/herself. They love kids with initiative, and will gladly assist you. Take pictures with you when you go and dress to impress: at the very least, clean jeans and an ironed, button down shirt-TUCKED IN. Good luck!

I just came across your site via TumbleweedHouses.com and I think you have such a great project going, for so many great reasons! Life is too short and you're a great example of someone who is using their time here well and leaving a positive mark on the earth. I look forward to seeing your project progress!
